It’s always a pleasure to work with a musician who is a master of their instrument. We recently had master cellist Christine Lamprea in the studio recording several parts on a piece for jazz composer Derek Menchan. The combination of Derek’s score and Christine’s playing was a showcase of all the particularities and nuance of the cello as well as its versatility.
We recorded Christine’s performances with a combination of 3 mic setups. We had a close mono mic for all the forward detail of a lead cello part, an overhead stereo pair for a sense of space, and a medium distance room mic to capture the natural resonance of the acoustic instrument in our well-treated, warm sounding room. Christine’s range of emotion and intensity while performing each part made full use of each mic placement.
